Landscaping and Lawn Care Business Insurance: Why General Liability and Workers’ Comp May Not Be Enough

Most landscaping and lawn care business owners understand the importance of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance. Your crews operate equipment, work on customers’ properties, and handle physically demanding jobs. Protecting your business and employees is part of running a professional operation.

But what happens when the problem is the work itself?

An irrigation system is installed incorrectly. A new lawn fails because the crew skipped an important preparation step. A paver patio must be removed and rebuilt because it was installed with the wrong slope.

These situations raise a question every landscaping contractor should ask: Does my insurance cover the cost of a mistake in my work?

That is where contractors errors and omissions insurance, often called contractors E&O, deserves a closer look.

General Liability and Workers’ Compensation Are the Foundation

General liability insurance helps protect your business against covered claims involving bodily injury or damage to someone else’s property. For example, a mower could throw a rock through a customer’s window, or a visitor could trip over equipment your crew left on a walkway.

Workers’ compensation addresses a different exposure: employees who suffer work-related injuries or illnesses. For lawn care and landscaping crews, that could involve lifting injuries, equipment accidents, or other injuries on the job.

Both coverages are essential parts of an insurance review. However, neither should be treated as a promise that your insurance will pay to correct every installation error or workmanship problem.

Damage caused by your work and the cost of correcting your work can be treated differently under an insurance policy.

What Is Contractors Errors and Omissions Insurance?

Contractors E&O can help address certain claims arising from mistakes, omissions, defective materials, or faulty workmanship. Depending on the policy, coverage may include covered costs to repair or replace defective work.

For a landscaping business, that makes it worth discussing when your services include planting, sod installation, irrigation, drainage, hardscaping, or similar installation work. SECURA, for example, describes contractors E&O protection for faulty workmanship and certain costs associated with redoing work. Coverage varies by insurance company and policy form.

Some businesses can obtain this protection through an endorsement added to their policy. Others may need separate coverage. The name of the coverage alone does not tell you everything it protects.

Landscaping Claim Examples: Where Could E&O Matter?

The following are hypothetical examples of claims to discuss with your agent. They illustrate potential exposures rather than guaranteed coverage or actual MBG client claims.

1. Improper Soil Preparation Causes a New Lawn to Fail

Your company installs sod at a newly built home. The agreement calls for soil preparation before installation, but your crew misses that step. The sod does not establish properly, and the customer demands that you remove it, prepare the soil, and install a new lawn.

The claim centers on the quality of your completed work. You should not assume general liability will pay those replacement costs.

What to review: Whether contractors E&O covers faulty installation and the associated labor and materials. Also ask about exclusions involving living plants, maintenance, drought, or failure to establish.

2. An Irrigation Installation Error Requires Rework

Your crew installs an irrigation system but connects several zones incorrectly. Parts of the property receive too little water, while other areas are overwatered. The customer demands that you excavate and reinstall portions of the system.

What to review: Whether your coverage includes irrigation operations and the cost of correcting an installation error. Damage to surrounding property may raise separate coverage questions.

3. A Paver Patio Has the Wrong Slope

A landscaping company installs a patio that slopes toward the house rather than away from it. Water pools near the foundation, and the customer demands that the patio be removed and rebuilt.

Even before water damages the house, the contractor may face a substantial bill to correct the patio.

What to review: Whether the policy covers hardscaping, faulty workmanship, and any design responsibilities your business accepts.

4. The Crew Installs the Wrong Materials

A signed proposal specifies one type of landscape material, but the crew installs a different product. The customer demands removal and replacement to match the approved specifications.

What to review: Whether an accidental failure to follow specifications falls within the E&O coverage. A disagreement about appearance, an intentional substitution, or a contractual guarantee may be treated differently.

Does Contractors E&O Cover Landscape Design?

Do not assume workmanship coverage includes every design exposure.

If your company recommends drainage solutions, prepares landscape plans, or designs retaining walls and irrigation systems, explain those services to your agent. Some contractors E&O forms offer limited design protection, while broader professional services may require separate professional liability coverage. SECURA identifies limited design liability as a feature of its contractors E&O offering.

Installing a system according to someone else’s plans and taking responsibility for designing that system can create different insurance needs.

E&O Is Not a Warranty for Every Unhappy Customer

Contractors E&O does not mean every callback, dead plant, missed deadline, or dissatisfied customer becomes an insured claim.

Ask your agent to explain:

  • Which landscaping and lawn care operations are covered.
  • Whether coverage includes correcting your own defective work.
  • How the policy treats plants, sod, irrigation, drainage, and hardscaping.
  • Whether design services and subcontracted work are included.
  • What exclusions apply to guarantees, maintenance, chemicals, or pollution.
  • What limits, deductibles, and reporting requirements apply.

A promise in your customer contract may also go beyond what your insurance covers. Reviewing your proposals and service agreements alongside your policy helps identify those gaps.

Remember Your Trucks, Trailers, and Equipment

General liability, workers’ compensation, and contractors E&O address different parts of your business. A complete review should also consider commercial auto coverage for your vehicles and appropriate coverage for trailers, mowers, skid steers, and other equipment.

If you apply fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides, discuss those operations specifically. Chemical application and pollution exposures deserve their own coverage review.

Your insurance should reflect the services you perform today. A company that started with mowing may have very different needs after adding irrigation, patios, retaining walls, or drainage work.
