Water Leak Detectors:

Why Insurance Carriers Are Betting Big on a Small Device

Water damage is one of the most common — and most expensive — homeowners insurance claims in the country. It’s not the dramatic burst pipe that does most of the damage; it’s the slow leak behind a wall, under a slab, or from a failing water heater that goes unnoticed for weeks. By the time you see the stain on the ceiling, you may be looking at tens of thousands of dollars in repairs, mold remediation, and weeks of disruption. That’s why one of the fastest-growing trends in home insurance isn’t a new coverage at all. It’s a small device: the water leak detector.

That’s why one of the fastest-growing trends in home insurance isn’t a new coverage at all. It’s a small device: the water leak detector.

How Water Leak Detectors Work

Water leak detection technology has come a long way from the simple puddle sensors of a few years ago. Today’s devices generally fall into two categories:

Point sensors are small devices placed in leak-prone spots — under sinks, behind the washing machine, near the water heater, in the basement. When they detect moisture, they sound an alarm and send an alert to your phone.

Whole-home monitors are the real game changer. Devices like LeakBot clamp onto your main water line and continuously monitor the temperature and flow characteristics of the water moving through your home’s plumbing. Because they can detect the subtle, continuous flow of even a tiny hidden leak, they often catch problems long before any visible damage appears. Some systems go a step further and pair with an automatic shut-off valve that closes your main water line the moment a serious leak is detected — even when you’re away.

That last part matters. Most catastrophic water losses happen when nobody is home to catch them. A leak that starts on a Friday afternoon in a vacation home can run unchecked for weeks. A smart monitor turns that month-long disaster into a phone notification and a plumber visit.

Why Carriers Are Starting to Require Them

Insurance carriers have taken notice — because the claims data is hard to ignore. Water damage claims are frequent, severe, and largely preventable with early detection.

In the high-value home market, leak detection has moved from “nice to have” to a condition of coverage with many carriers. Insurers that specialize in larger and more complex homes increasingly require whole-home leak detection or automatic water shut-off systems before they’ll write the policy — especially on secondary and seasonal homes, where the house may sit unoccupied for weeks or months at a time. An unoccupied home is a worst-case scenario for water damage, and carriers are pricing (and underwriting) accordingly.

Even where detectors aren’t strictly required, many carriers now offer meaningful premium credits for installing them. If you own a high-value home, a lake house, or any property that sits empty for stretches of the year, expect this question to come up at your next renewal.

Nationwide Is Giving Them Away — For Free

Some carriers have gone beyond requirements and credits. Nationwide is so convinced of the savings potential that it gives leak detection devices to its homeowners policyholders at no charge through its smart home program.

Here’s how it works: eligible Nationwide homeowners can enroll and receive a free LeakBot water leak detection device (along with a free Ting sensor that helps prevent electrical fires). Installation is a quick do-it-yourself job, and activating the device can qualify you for a discount on your policy. A few things worth knowing:

  • The device needs to be activated within 55 days of enrollment to keep the discount.
  • The program can be added to existing eligible policies, not just new ones.
  • Nationwide states the data isn’t used for underwriting or to deny claims — it’s there to protect your home, and you can monitor it yourself through the device’s app.
  • You own the device, even if you later leave the program.

When a major national carrier is willing to ship free hardware to its policyholders, that tells you something: preventing one serious water claim more than pays for a lot of leak detectors.

What This Means for Missouri and Arkansas Homeowners

Whether you own a high-value home in Springfield, a lake house on Table Rock, or a rental property you only visit a few times a year, water leak detection is worth a serious look. At minimum, it can protect you from one of the most disruptive claims a homeowner can face. Increasingly, it may also be the key to qualifying for the best coverage and pricing available.

As an independent agency, MBG Insurance represents Nationwide along with a full lineup of carriers serving Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas — including several high-value home markets with their own leak detection programs and requirements. We can help you sort out which carriers reward the devices, which require them, and whether a free device program like Nationwide’s smart home offering fits your situation.
